So what’s your music story?

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

I sat my linguistics exam yesterday. THANK GOD THAT IT’S OVER. I don’t know a single person on that course who enjoyed it in the end, no matter how enthuisastic they started out. I just hope that I’ve passed, fingers crossed! Now I have 2 weeks worth of Romanticism history to catch up on … *dies* I just have to keep on reminding myself that all of this is so that I can go study Korean in my dream university.

Today, instead of talking about the music that I like, I wanted to ask, what music do you like? How did you start listening to Korean music? What are some of your favourite artists, or favourite songs? Do you listen to Korean music more than the music of your own country or another country? I’m always very interested to see what people like, and how they came to hear it. Some people’s stories are very similiar to my own, others are vastly different. So, even if you don’t listen to Korean music, I’d love to hear about that too!

OK, what’s the difference between a phoneme and an allophone? ㅎㅎㅎ

I still find that there’s nothing on the Korean music scene that interests me. That could just be because I haven’t found it yet, and contemporary Korean music that will interest me is still hiding somewhere beneath the surface…

I guess I simply haven’t dug enough. If all the Canadian/American music that I knew about was the pap they play on Top 40 radio, then I’d probably say I dislike contemporary Canadian/American music, too…

But, I admit that there are some Korean songs that are really fun to do at the 노래방. 박진영 has some good stuff that can be 노래방-friendly.

저는 판소리 좋아하는 사람인데 그가 임권택 감독의 영화 “춘향가” 나왔을 때 전 일이었어요.

I actually became a fan of 국악 after I saw a TV special many years ago with deaf Scottish percussionist Evelyn Glennie. She had gone to S. Korea to explore the musical traditions, mainly its percussion traditions. I was truly inspired.

You wanna make me suicidal!? I’m never looking at linguistics ever again! XD

판소리! That’s something I haven’t delved too deeply into myself yet. 판소리 is something that I can appreciate as a cultural experience, but from the little bits of it that I’ve heard so far, I don’t think that I can appreciate it as anything beyond that.

    Daniel:
There’s plenty of depth and variation in Korean music, if you just know where to look, like any other country’s music scene - and like music from any other country, it’s the finding where to look that’s half the battle. You should let me know some artists that you like or the type of music you like (since I’m guessing the whole pop/hiphop/R&B thing isn’t doing it for you), and I’ll see if I know any artists that you might like ^^

  5. avatar Ed Says:

A good friend of mine once said that 판소리 singers should be prime punk-rock singers.

Favourite Korean music -Where do I start???
First of all 동방신기 are my insperation for wanting to learn and visit Korea! (I was lucky enough to see them live too!!)

I tend to only listen to Korean Music, (and 동방신기 in Japanese - so glad they are back singing Korean again!) and my ipod has 동방신기, 하동균, 서태지, Se7en, Rain, as favourites.
A lot of my music is by 하동균 - I just love his voice, (다시 사랑한다면 goes down in my all time favourite songs) my Korean friends send me a lot of music so I do get to hear different bands and if I like them, I buy the album! - not an easy task in UK!

Sadly, my Korean is not good enough to sing along to most of the songs but I can usually join in with the chourus!

I can’t remember the last time I sat down and listened to “western” music as even my daughter listens to Korean/Japanese all the time!

But it’s cool to be able to confuse people when you utter things such as: “Oh, well you see, in Korean [r] and [l] are allophones, not phonemes.” *grins*

I’ve liked multiple boy bands and I generally enjoy what’s on the charts. I do have/had soft spots for BSB, NSYNC (mainly JC Chasez), Patrick Wolf, and Josh Groban. And I like some classical, country, whatever. So it probably doesn’t come as a surprise that I’m a big SuJu fan (but I must admit that the music really isn’t the main reason why I like them).

I used to be a singer for a hardcore band for a couple of years. So I was really into bands like Slipknot, Sevendust, Embodyment, Zao, and Dillinger Escape Plan.

But also, I was really into emo music at the time (emo 1.0 not this new version out now… ) like Juliana Theory, Weezer, and early Dashboard Confessional.

In junior college, I studied music at a school that had an incredible jazz program. I played a lot of jazz both as a bassist and as a singer - so of course I had a soft spot for bossas and big bands.

Ultimately, I secretly fell for Korean pop music about a year and a half ago. Can’t say what was my first big breakout other than Super Junior in general. I typically listen to mostly Korean music but certainly have a reputable mp3 library of English language music. I would still say that Jimmy Eat World is my favorite band, but I also get into Anberlin, Killswitch Engage, and Dead Poetic.

On the Korean side of things, I dig on Super Junior, 소녀시대, Epik High, 빅방, 캐스커, and 윤하.

I also play something - an Indonesian something called a “gamelan”.

wow.. where do i even start with music? i am similar to matthew because i didn’t really listen to pop before kpop either.

as far as english music goes, i listen to all sorts of things.. i absolutely love classic rock (CCR, the beatles, the beach boys, styx, simon and garfunkel, etc). i am also a huge hardcore fan (i don’t like many bands who sing AND scream, but i am a sucker for melodic guitars) like old underoath, as cities burn, life in your way, old zao (shawn jonas era) etc.. i absolutely love frank sinatra and billie holiday.. i love classical music as well.. i can kick it to some old-school country (johnny cash, willie nelson, etc).. and i absolutely adore good instrumental music (sigur ros, godspeed you black emperor, etc).. and some of my other favorite bands i’m not sure how to classify: mineral, band of horses, anything jeremy enigk has ever done, jimmy eat world, brand new, the killers, etc.

however, my favorite band of all time is thrice. i love every album they have ever done, and they’ve been my favorite ever since i saw them in 2000.

as far as korean music goes, that’s pretty much all i listen to these days. i generally don’t like female vocals, so i listen to just about everything else. but my favorites are: 넬, 슈퍼주니어, 동방신가, 빅뱅, 알렉스, 에프티 아일렌드, 브라이언, 에픽 하이, 줄라이, and ss501. my first encounter with kpop was actually seeing a video of 동방신기의 micky yoochun crying on 야심만만 because of how hard it was living in america and his parent’s divorce. how can you not fall in love with him after that? ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

sorry i wrote so much. i just like music ^^

i listen to english and korean music. not so much of mandopop even though i’m chinese.

i like muse and jason mraz.

i used to like H.O.T. back in high school. got totally influenced by my friend. ;) i also like eun jiwon, lee hyori, buzz and all of the really old skool singers. man, can anyone tell me where’s 1tym?

  14. avatar Cassandra Says:

I am big on 동방신기. In fact…most of the music I listen to is by them. I’m so happy they’re back in Korea.

I also listen to a lot of Super Junior, Epik High, SG Wannabe, SHINee, etc. etc.

I find that I mostly listen to Japanese, Chinese and Korean music. I listen to a little of EVERYTHING…but my friends have told me it’s weird to hear me listening to something in English anymore.

  15. avatar Alyssa Says:

I really adore music, but I’m very picky about what’s good and what’s not, so I have a very short list of favorite bands. I’ve found that I like bands that are different — the polar opposite of mainstream, usually, but I can only say this is true for American bands. The few American bands that I really like are Korn, Pantera, Damageplan, Chimaira, and Hellyeah.

As for Korean bands, I’ve only found one so far that’s captured my taste in a nutshell: 서태지와 아이들 and 서태지’s solo works. 서태지’s an incredible musician with a very diverse range of style. You can’t define his styles as simply “Kpop” or “Krock.” If I had to label his music, I’d call it “서태지,” simply because there’s no other way to label it correctly. By listening to 서태지, I’ve found that I like genres other than rock, such as, dare I say it, hip-hop that I used to hate and pop which was previously off limits to me. It’s really expanded my taste.

I also like a few Japanese bands, some of them kind of underground. Dir en grey was the first Japanese band in my favorites, then I found Girugamesh, the Gazette, LM.C, and exist trace. They’re all quite heavy (save the Gazette), but that’s because I’m still annoyed by Jpop and American pop.

Haha sorry this looks like an essay, I do a million in school and can’t get out of the habit. ^^

Recently I found a korean band that I really like - 자우림
I found it through last.fm because it was a recommendation.
The first song I listened to was Carnival Amour and I got really hooked up on it :)
Now I’m absolutely stuck with another song of theirs - Poor Tom.
    I’m absolutely song binging it.
Otherwise I particularly like soundtracks from korean movies and dramas like 달콤한 인생, 박하 사탕, 엽기적인 그녀, 비열한 거리, 마왕, 눈의 여왕 and others.
Actually I’m a bigger fan of korean cinema than music and that’s probably why I like music from soundtracks so much :)

Okay, so where do I start? Um… 동방신기 = my absolute favorite (it’s slightly a long story as to how I first learned about them… I guess I can maybe get to that in a minute), 빅뱅, 에픽하이, 비, 세븐, I like 보아, (I love Miyavi, but he sings in Japanese… but I’ve recently read he’s half Japanese and half Korean? I think that’s pretty cool)… I also really like Fly to the Sky…
Okay, so I’ll try to make this fairly brief. I’m not sure how it started, like what got my friend to find it, but one day my friend showed me and another friend the song Fairyland by Ayumi Hamasaki. I didn’t pay much attention to it at the time, but eventually I went back and listened, and really liked it. From there, I found the song Ourselves, and it was all downhill from there. I think the first Korean artist I really started listening to was BoA, but at the time, Korean didn’t interest me. In the summer of ‘07, my friend let me listen to 동방신기, and one night I looked up the song “Rising Sun” (the Korean version was the one I first listened to…)… I was sort of hooked from there. It went from being able to tell them apart by looking at them by being able to tell them apart by voice just listening and well it just turned into fangirlness ^^; But anyway, they turned me onto Korean, truthfully. Before them, I never was all that interested in Korean, and then I just realized I really liked it… And now, I love Korean… (I just am having difficulties going about learning it… It would be so much easier if I had a teacher, because I think I’d learn better that way… Well, at least I can read and write 한글 well… ^^ And I know if I really work hard, I can at least learn a decent amount) So yeah, I know that 동방신기 is my absolute favorite and they are just simply amazing beyond words (they are more than just “pretty faces” ) because they’re the only artists to ever make me cry… ^^
    …Wow, that was long… ^^; Haha so yeah…

  18. avatar Ts_Heidi Says:

Gah, how late is this post? But Nicole, try telling 슈퍼주니어 apart by just their voices! Now THAT’s a feat. Hahaha. (I can XD!)

For me…my friend Lindsey showed me a few 동방신기 songs a while ago, and I liked them a lot, just not enough to look into the band at all. I remember bookmarking them and listening to them for a while though…I can’t remember what they were. Then later on, she showed me Sapphire Blue and Ai Ni Ai Ni by Suju and SJ-M. I really liked those, and I listened to them quite often…but then, randomly one day half a year ago, she was telling me some stuff that happened in Super Junior’s Full House. I was like dying laughing and said I wanted to watch it, and I did. Bam, instant fangirl :)

Although Suju is still my first love, I like them more for their personalities than their music. DBSK is almost the same, and I like most of their songs, but they do have a lot…my very favorite bands are always the ones where I absolutely love almost every one of the songs they make. Namely, 빅뱅!! Oh my GOD I can’t get over them. Hahaha. Another band I like a lot now is SHINee. Their Amigo CD @___@ I don’t think there’s a single song by them yet that I don’t love, even if I can’t even tell the members apart by looks or voices at all. In my book, that makes them an instant favorite.

I also love introducing other people to Korean music as well…hahaha! It’s like a virus. ;)

PS: I love the skinship ㅠㅠ someone save me from my unhealthy obsession ㅎㅎ
