외식 (Eating out)
Friday, March 21st, 2008Last week all of the kids and staff went out for dinner. Hence “외식.” 외 literally means “outside” like in 의국인 “foreigner” or literally “outside-country-person.” 식 means food, or a meal. You may remember a culture class from a few months ago where the KClass crew showed us what a typical “희식” looked like. 희 in that case means company, so 희식 is a meal with your co-workers.
The orphanage does this at least once a year, and by good fortune I happened to be there this year again. It’s really just a fun time with the kids, and I get to seem them in a different setting. I think it’s a pretty good day for them, and one they really enjoy. It is one of the rare occasions when they really get to do something special with themselves that doesn’t come from some outside organization.
I made this video so you can see some of the kids. This isn’t everyone. They split all the various sections up among several different restaurants since more than 100 people would completely overwhelm any restaurant! The meal was 삼겹살. And it was more than I really should have eaten…but the mean kept coming! And since kids have small bellies… well, I got to eat an awful lot!

hello. i think it should replace the -ㅢs with -ㅚs.
At first I thought, “he’s not gonna ask a transcript of this, right?” hehehe

James… thanks for the editing… I’ll take all the help I can get. And no… transcribing this would certainly be a nightmare! But if you want to give a few of the sentences a shot… go for it!
Did you notice that the one piece of meat the boy to my left gave me came right off the table…look at his eyes when he puts it in my mouth… so mischievous !

YES! That boy to your left is so cheeky! Whenever I first watched the video I was thinking . . .wow so nice . . . the boy is treating you so nicely! Haha I hope you told him off afterwards!
Does this boy Myungin has a liking towards you? He made you that food and I noticed the previous video was him again.

Ha… I didn’t realize what he did until I was editing the video. And I don’t think he was doing anything nefarious. He probably tried to pick it off of his plate, or the grill, and it fell. And the boy to my right is one of the more polite kids there. He is also willing to engage in longer conversations with me, putting up with my Korean ability^^ I try not to have “favorites” but the reality is that I am drawn to some kids more than others.

The kids are, as they always are, so cute!!
정말 너무 귀엽다! 아이들이 말을 잘 안 듣는 것 같기도 하지만 사실은 오스틴 네 말을 정말 잘 듣는 것 같기도 해 ^^

I like how they feed you Austin
But that really says something about Korean culture!

Yeah, you’re right Keith.. it’s pretty nice. But they certainly don’t make a habit out of it. At a normal dinner in the orphanage 식당 it probably wouldn’t happen. But there is something different about eating 삼겹살 together around a grill….

these kids are cute but i cannot help but think how sad it is that there are so many unwanted human beings in the world and people cannot control their reproductive systems and sexual urges. good job anyway
