Words with Many Faces (3) - 쓰다
Wednesday, March 19th, 2008또 하나의 ‘여러 얼굴을 가진 단어’로서(As another ‘word with many faces) 오늘은 ‘쓰다’라는 동사를 소개하겠습니다(I’d like to introduce the verb ‘쓰다’).

If you already knew this word, what meaning was new to you?

I only knew that 쓰다 means To Write, To Use and To Wear. i didn’t know the other meanings! Wow so many different meanings!
Learning words with different meanings is very important because it’s very useful since it can used in many different situations.
쓰다, when it means To Wear, can also be used to say to wear glasses.

Yeah
the cases where 쓰다 means To Wear are :
안경을 쓰다
모자를 쓰다
가발을 쓰다
마스크를 쓰다
all having to do with your ‘face’ or ‘head.

Thanks for this one!! I didn’t know the meaning of wearing and exerting. These maps are very useful in filling those little gaps of knowledge^^

I’m really glad you included the meaning of “to exert effort.” I’ve been trying to figure out the most natural way of saying things like “I’m trying to” or “I try to.”
I’ve been using the structure “~하려고 노력하다.” Do both these sentences have the same meaning?
나는 한국 사람에게 한국말로 하려고 애 쓴다.
나는 한국 사람에게 한국말로 하려고 노력한다.

Oh actually! If it’s OK I’d like to make requests
I see the words 놓다 걸(리)다 and 매달다 used in many different contexts, and I’d be curious to see how they all work. =D

this is a very interesting post.
쓰다 also can mean to consume; for example, 이차는기름을많이쓴다 (this car consumes a lot of gas). although many Koreans say “이차는기름을많이먹는다” or “이차는기름이많이든다” instead, 쓰다 can be used in that sense as well. Or no?? I just happen to come up with it.

Jisun,
Interesting question : )
But 쓰다 is more of an ‘active’ verb, and 든다, 먹는다 is more passive than 쓰다 at least in Korean, so a car cannot ‘쓰다’ anything because 쓰다 is something that people usually do using a car or any other object, so …^^ 이 차는 기름을 많이 쓴다 would sound a bit unnatural, or at least less natural than 기름이 많이 든다 or 기름을 많이 먹는다 ^^
