Words with Many Faces (2) - 잡다

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

I’m back with another word that has many faces! :-) Hope you’ll enjoy this one as well!

잡다(japda) basically means to “catch” or to “grab”, but it can mean a variety of things, and it’s a very useful verb, so please give it a look!

    Thanks! :-)

  3. avatar 비누 Says:

(Hyunwoo) Says:

(Hyunwoo) Says:

  6. avatar 비누 Says:

Says:

(Hyunwoo) Says:

“내 사람으로 만들다” 라고 하면 make him mine 처럼 ..

  9. avatar Jacqueline (쟈클린) Says:

잡다 is a very useful word!

hahaha the word that caught my attention immediately was 모기 ^^, i hate those insects!!!!!!! there are so many in my country!

  10. avatar 비누 Says:

Says:

  12. avatar Daniel K Says:

Wow, another word that I had no idea had so many meanings! But like last time, they’re all some related… “Arresting” a criminal and “catching” a criminal is the same thing…

What about if a student gets caught doing something bad, say, going into the teacher’s cupboard? One time I heard one of my students going “아, 걸렸다!” when I caught him throwing paper in the hallway (don’t ask). Is that the equivalent of “caught”/”busted!”

  13. avatar Daniel K Says:

    some –> somehow

  14. avatar Yuri Says:

So many meanings~ @_@ but very interesting

btw, 마리 is the counting unit for animals?? .. i couldn’t find the meaning

  15. avatar 선현우(Hyunwoo) Says:

    Jacqueline,
yes … I hate 모기 too! :D It’s amazing how the whole world hates them and they still survive… ^^

    Daniel,
yeah, everything is sort of related, huh? :D
And yes, the word 걸리다 is usually only used in the passive form (not 걸다) when it’s about ‘getting caught/busted’ :-) I think 걸리다 is used more often than 잡히다 when you’re talking about doing something not recommended and getting busted.

    Yuri,
(Yes, right. 마리 is a word used for counting animals)
