Hyunwoo’s Mind Map on ‘March’
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008March seems very long compared to the short month of February right before it but a lot of things happen in this month of the year to make it a very short one actually. Schools start again in March in Korea, and the weather gets much warmer in March, it almost stops snowing, the flowers start blooming, and so on. But, somehow, when I think of the word “March”, there isn’t as much that comes to my mind as when I think of the other months. I am not sure, but I guess it might have something to do with all the celebrations of the new year that go on before March…

What do you think of when you think about the month of March?

I notice that in almost every mindmap so far there seems to be something about colds. Now I’m starting to understand the Korean seasonal “take care” phrase, 감기 조심!
Also, how many “men must give their girlfriends chocolates, candies, and other things” days are there in Korea?!?!
Nov. 11: Peppero Day
Feb. 14: Valentine’s Day
March 14: White Day
As my students would say, 뭐야~~아~!
그리고 겨울 방학에는 고등학생이 학교에 가야 한다고 하네요?!

맞아요.
From November to March, 감기 is always something that’s mentioned when greeting or meeting people in Korea Haha. And yeah…. those *duty* days in Korea are very numerous. Valentine’s Day(Feb 14), White Day(March 14), Rose Day(May 14), Pepero Day(November 11), and there is always something on the 14th of almost every month… haha.
그리고… 넵… 저는 고등학교 때 항상 방학 때 학교에서 수업을 들었어요 ㅠ.ㅠ 보충 수업들 때문에 한국의 고등학생에게 방학은 방학이 아니죠…

벛꽃놀이 sounds like a game but is it a festival or just the season? Cherry blossoms?

When I hear March I think… SPRING BREAK, and only one more month until SUMMER BREAK and then senior year of high school!! YES hahaha. Ah, I’m so excited.

Courtny
Yes, spring break is cool !!
For me personally, spring breaks were meaningless actually.. because I had to go to school anyway.. Haha

Steve, 벛꽃놀이 means “going out (on a picnic or for a walk) to see the cherry blossoms that have bloomed full”
so if someone says ‘벛꽃놀이 가자’…. it doesn’t mean anything complicated but just going to the area where a lot of 벛꽃 is blooming and just … having a look

Oh yeah, I appreciate the numerous breaks American students have haha. I have a pen pal and he told me “the Korean education system is hell.” I love to learn, but from 8 in the morning until 10 or 11 at night seems a tad bit long haha.
Do students in Korea get a lot of homework, since they spend most of their time in school? It doesn’t seem possible to have homework and stay at school until 10 or 11 at night..

Haha
yeah… I would have said the same thing if I were still in highschool but.. I hope it’ll get better.
Yeah students in Korea usually get a lot of homework (and even more in university these days) and have almost no time to do it at home, so what they do is … they don’t actually have *classes* until 10 pm or 11 pm. The regular classes are over by 7 pm and most of the teachers go home, and one or two teachers *in duty* for that day will remain to make sure that the students *study* in the classrooms, and that’s the time the students use to do homework.
And I think it’s very inefficient… hehe.

Ah, I see. Sounds exhausting haha. I personally finish my classes at 12:30 hehe, I’m lucky. The only complaint I have about my school is the limited foreign language classes :[ I’m glad I found Korean Class, it helps a lot. And, having a pen pal to speak to helps a lot, too :]

I found him on interpals.net
He’s not so much a “pen” pal, as a webcam and microphone pal haha. It’s really interesting learning the culture of a country directly from a person living there.
I try to help him with any English questions he has, but it’s surprisingly hard to explain words like should, would, could, maybe, perhaps etc. I had never thought of their meaning before I explained them to him. That’s why I love learning new languages, I’ve learned so many new things about English haha.
